CFB WEEK 11 PREVIEW:
“I won’t give you anything and you won’t give me anything–we’ll both hold up our heads.”- Former USC OG John Wayne as “McClintock.”
- Northwestern @ Southern Cal FRI at 7PM on Fox
Southern Cal Safety Bishop Fitzgerald has been impactful in every game this season totaling a nation leading 5 Interceptions. Tied with:
- Ahmaad Moses- SMU
- Elijah Green- Tulsa
- Louis Moore- IND
- Boogie Trotter- Marshall
Five interceptions for Bishop leads the USC secondary but the Trojans boast more than a few DB’s that can impact the game. Safeties Kamari Ramsey and Christian Pearce roam the secondary looking to swat a ball or lay a shoulder pad into an opponent. The secondary is deep on this squad.
What does this mean for incoming Northwestern?
Well, I’ve yet to watch an entire quarter that Northwestern have played this season. To be frank, they weren’t one of my teams that I believed in before the season and slipped right under my nose to 5-2. So, the following stat should be taken with a grain of salt because it’s only a number on a page. However, I think it may help shape Friday Night’s narrative.
Northwestern QB Preston Stone has thrown nine interceptions so far this season. That number is good for 3rd most in the nation tied with Carson Beck, Logan Fife, DJ Lagway and six others.
It’s ‘two plus two’ type of stuff, but this secondary against an interception prone QB should equal trouble. That said, I’ve been wrong on Northwestern all season. This stat on the page could mean absolutely nothing; it just caught my eye.
I like this USC team, but if Northwestern wants to win gritty in LA Friday night, so be it. I need to be rooting for this team to rise above the stats on the page. Coach David Braun could care less about projections or opinions–he is coaching a gritty team. They will show up Friday Night ready to play.
The USC Secondary vs Preston Stone will be on my watchlist. I hope it’s a good game late.
In reality, USC should win. 20-10 seems right. Who knows?
—
“Circumstance does not make the man; it reveals him to himself.”- James Allen
It feels like there is more to say in the lead up to Friday Night’s matchup in Pasadena, so let us continue.
—
Be there Friday Night in Pasadena or watch on Fox if you can’t make the game. It’s a long commute for most.
Whether you go to the game or watch from the lazy boy, wearing wool socks and eating a bowl of cheesy mashed potatoes, these are stats that can help keep you engaged in the game and may help tell the story as the game unfolds.
N’WESTERN WILDCATS
DEF Impact Players
- LB Mac Uihlein: 59 Tackles, 5 TFL, 4 INT, 1 FF
- DB Robert Fitzgerald: 69 Tackles, 3.5 TFL, 1 PD, 1 FR
- CB Fred Davis II: 25 Tackles, 6 PD, 1 FR, 1 TFL
- DB Braden Turner: 28 tackles, 2 FF, 1 TFL
These four and the rest of the defense have played quite stingy up to this point only giving up 16.8/ points per game, which is good for 15th out of the 136 teams.
OFF Impact Player
- RB Caleb Komolafe: 608 yards, 7 Td’s all on the ground.
Caleb gashed Nebraska two weeks ago for 125 yards and two TDs. The Wildcats lean on him quite often, and the success of the offense hinges on his performance. The Wildcats are 102nd in scoring (22.5) and will need to play in their style of football to win this game.
USC TROJANS
DEF Impact Players:
- #19 SS Bishop Fitzgerald: Who we know quite well at this point.
- McNelly Award Watchlist
- #18 LB Eric Gentry: 57 Tackles, 7 TFL, 3 Sacks, 5 FF, 1 PD
- 6’6/200
- #8 DL Devan Thompkins: 23 Tackles, 5.5 TFL, 3 Sacks, 2 PD, 1 FF
Currently, the USC Defense is allowing 22.4/ ppg which is only good for 53rd in the country at this point. When needed, however, I’ve seen these three among others make the plays needed to win. Stopping the run will be key.
OFF Impact Players:
- DUAL Impactful Running Backs
- #30 rFr King Miller: 550 Yards, 4 TD
- #2 JR Waymond Jordan: 631, 5 TD
- #14 QB Jayden Maiava: 15 TD, 5 picks, 289.4 pass yards/ game
- 5 Rushing TD
- #6 WR/ PR Makai Lemon: 776 Rec Yards, 7 TD
This is the unit that is winning games for USC. 8th in the nation in scoring with a whopping 39.8/ ppg. The running backs on the ground and Jayden through the air–it’s all be working for the Trojans.
THE GAME
Enter the cliche routine for the little team to win on the road: limit the big plays, limit mistakes, establish the run, stop the run, control the clock, control the tempo, take the crowd out of it–you know? The typical talking points when breaking down a game like this one. Well, it may be cliche, but those things are said for a reason–because it’s a formula that works. It’s not fun or sexy but it’s a more likely pathway to victory than showing up to Big, Shiny, Brand New out of the box USC on a Friday Night hoping to win a high scoring game.
I think USC wins for sure if they get to 30 points. Preston Stone is just too much of a liability to keep up in a game like that. Northwestern will be hoping for less than thirty total points to be scored going into the 4th quarter. After that it may be anyone’s game to win at that point.
—
So–will the Northwestern impact players on defense be enough to slow the 8th ranked USC offense? That’s about the one question. If they can keep USC under 30, there will be a chance, but Northwestern will have to find a way to score.
I like the sophomore Komolafe at Running Back, but will he be enough to carry this seemingly one-dimensional offense? Even if he rushes for 110 and scores twice, Northwestern will still lose the game if they allow their average. (16.8) They will certainly need production from elsewhere on the field.
For some reason, I like 6’5/ 225 Senior Tight End Lawson Albright to make some sort of impact on this game. Maybe it’s scoring, maybe it’s laying the key block that leads to a timely touchdown. I’ll keep an eye on the backup tight end. It could be him or anyone, but someone else will have to contribute on offense unless the defense can stymy Lincoln Riley’s offense.
Northwestern’s defense will have to do something special in order to win this game. They’ve got the impact players for it. Will they seize the moment on the road?
All of this will unfold Friday Night at 7PM on Fox. I’ve been a Trojan all season, but if they lose, I’ll be dropping them for Northwestern because the Wildcats will have earned it and USC will be eliminated from the playoff conversation.
We’ll just have to wait and see.

- Brigham Young @ Texas Tech Noon Saturday ABC
Two Stars on Defensive side caught my eye–David Bailey and Jacob Rodriguez.
- LB David Bailey
- 11.5 Sacks, 14 Tackles for loss, 2 FF
- LB Jacob Rodriguez
- 77 Tackles, 8.5 TFL, 7 FF, 5 Pass Defended, 2 INT, 1 FR
Both of these young men are making the type of impact plays that win games.
Will the pair make enough plays to overcome the unbeaten ‘Cougs’ from Provo? BYU’s Freshman QB Bear Bachmeier and running back LJ Martin will have their say in the matter–Either way, they will all be fun to watch.
So will this game. Let’s get to Saturday! I’m ready for this one now!

“Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.”- J.R.R. Tolkien
- (8-0) Ohio St at (2-7) Purdue BTN Noon
The Buckeyes are 1st in scoring defense and the most efficient offense this season. This has led them to a perfect 8-0 start and a number one ranking in the AP, CFP, and here at Single High Sports. A unanimous number one. A true favorite in this College Football Season, which is exactly what this season needs.
Georgia and potentially Indiana seem to be on the same level but up to this point, there has been no better team, and it all starts on defense.
Now, statistically, there are not any players on the team that stand out on the defensive side, but that does not mean that they don’t have elite players. In fact, it means quite the opposite. The reason no one on defense has any stats to brag about is because opposing offenses are off the field so quickly.
The defense led by S Caleb Downs and LB Arvell Reese is so efficient that the players do not get enough chances to make impactful plays. That said, the fact that the team surrenders less than a touchdown per game speaks for itself. This is an elite unit.
As is the offense.
Sophomore Quarterback Julian Sayin has been lights-out lethal so far this season. He’s completing over 80 percent of his throws, good for 1st in the nation, thrown for 23 touchdowns (3rd), and only thrown three interceptions. In fact, he only throws a pick 1.4 percent of the time. This means that every one-hundred pass attempts, Julian is only throwing 1.4 picks. It may be redundant to repeat the stat, but I think it adds to the impressiveness to see it spelled out that way. He has truly been on the elite end of efficient.
To continue to brag on the sophomore, he has a QB Rate of 197.1, which is also good for 1st in the nation.
Now, it begs the question, who is catching all of these completions and touchdowns?
Enter Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate. Both will play at the next level, and both are maximizing their season so far.
- SO Wide Receiver Jeremiah Smith: 55 Catches, 725 Yards, 10 TD
- JR WR Carnell Tate: 39 Catches, 711 Yards, 7 TD
- 18.2 yard/ reception
Having two future first round draft picks at receiver is almost unfair at this point. Again, this is what makes this Ohio St team such a clear-cut title contender. The QB, Safety, Linebacker, and two wide receivers could all be 1st round picks in their respective NFL drafts. The Buckeyes are built like a video game team. It may truly take Georgia or up and comer Indiana to stop them.
However, it’s Purdue, not Georgia or Indiana that will battle the Buckeyes this week. Will the Boilermakers be able to put up a fight?
The Boilermakers are a dismal 109th in points scored per game and 88th in points allowed, so on paper, there truly is not a prayer. The weather looks like it’ll be warm and cloudy with some light wind gusts, so I don’t expect it to make an impact on how the game is played.
–West Lafayette is due for some snow this weekend but look for it on Sunday. Saturday will be the ‘warm before the storm’ type of situation.
So, who on the home team will step up and stop this offense?
PURDUE IMPACT PLAYERS:
- SR DB Tahj Ra-El- 81 Tackles, 4 Pass Defended, 2 TFL
- SO DB Hudauri Hines- 25 Tackles, 6 PD, 1 INT
- SR DB Myles Slusher- 52 Tackles, 3 PD, 2 TFL, 1 Sack, 1 INT
- SR DL CJ Nunnally IV- 32 Tackles, 7.5 TFL, 5 Sacks, 2 FF, 1 PD
I’m not saying that they will put an end to the Buckeyes dominance, but perhaps these players can put up just enough fight to give their team a chance in the 4th.
If they get that chance, they’ve got the kicker to save the day.
- K Spencer Porath is 22/22 on Extra Points and 11/12 on Field Goals this year.
Maybe it’s the kicker that wins the day. Who knows?
Purdue last won on September 6th when they beat Southern Illinois 34-17. They lost to Rutgers by 3, Michigan by 5, and Minnesota by 7 and the rest were blowouts.
However, they played just about their most competitive game this past week when they lost by five to Michigan. It was tight throughout the entirety of the game. Will the Boilermakers build upon their decent performance or lose by 36 at home?
Logic and stats say that a 42-6 Buckeye win is in order.
Like always, we’ll just have to watch on Saturday.
The Buckeyes are solid and complete, and it would be a travesty if they don’t make the National Semi- Finals at a minimum. I’d love to see them play Georgia in the Natty.

- Texas A&M @ Misssouri 1:30 ABC
The third ranked Aggies are on the road in Columbia Saturday afternoon to take on two loss Missouri. These two SEC foes have a storied rivalry that goes back to 1957 when they played for the first time. 5th ranked Texas A&M won that matchup 28-0 on October 5th in Columbia. Will this game be any different?
Let’s look at a few players that will have something to say about the result.
MISSOURI
The home side is currently 19th in the AP and 22nd in the CFP rankings and have a few players that have stood above the rest.
- RB Ahamad Hardy 937 Rushing Yards, 11 Rush TD
Hardy is the 3rd highest in yardage gained from rushing and is the most explosive player for the Tigers when they are able to establish the run which isn’t a guarantee every game. Vanderbilt, Auburn, and Alabama limited the Running Back’s effectiveness the past three weeks, but maybe this is the week he puts up over a hundred again. UMass on September 27th was the last time he cleared the century mark.
On defense there are three dudes that stand out above the rest.
- Zion Young
- Josiah Trotter
- Damon Wilson III
All three have been disruptive in the backfield and could make an impact on this game. Between the three, they total 24 TFL and 12 sacks. Monster efforts from all three will be needed to slow the 11th ranked offense in all the land.
TEXAS A&M
The 11th ranked offense has been getting significant production from a number of players, but one that I’d like to mention is WR Mario Craver. The Sophomore Mississippi State transfer has more than doubled his totals in yards, yards/ game this season, and if he scores this weekend, he will double his touchdowns from last season with three games yet to play.
- WR Mario Craver 716 REC Yards, 5 TD
On defense, the Aggies have one of my favorite Corners in all the land, 6’3 Will “the Blanket” Lee. His numbers are relatively low, but that could be because his side of the field doesn’t get thrown to very often. At 6’3, he is quite imposing on the perimeter, and he can cover quite the surface area with his go-go-gadget arms.
Another dude on defense that is quite the playmaker is Defensive End Cashius Howell.
- DE Cashius Howell 10.5 TFL, 9 Sacks, 3 PD
His best games so far were against LSU and Miss St totaling two TFL’s and two sacks in each. This tells me that he loves the big games. The higher the stakes the better for the 6’4 Senior and this is one of those games.
Will Lee, Cashius Howell, and the A&M defense will need take this game seriously and be up to the challenge of neutralizing True Freshman QB Matt Zollers, the powerhouse back behind him, and the rest of the nationally ranked home side.
Let’s all watch Saturday at 1:30 on ABC
—
- 5-3 Wake Forest at 8-1 Virginia Primetime Espn
Virginia is a top 12 team in every major poll.
- 12th in the AP, 11th in the CFP, and 11th here at SHS
But should they be? Are they ranked so highly because they are that good or because they just refuse to lose? Or is it that the ACC is so putrid that Virginia is the best they can produce? Or–are the ‘Hoos’ actually this good?
As is clearly seen from the polls, many across the nation agree that they are good enough to be ranked in the twelve, but they are certainly not a powerhouse guaranteed pick to make it.
That said, if they Cavaliers can get past the Demon Deacons this weekend, they will only have two games remaining: at Duke and VA Tech Thanksgiving weekend off a bye. Virginia looks destined for the ACC Championship Game at this point, and if they get there and win it, they will certainly have earned the right to be one of the chosen twelve at the end.
Again–will they? Only the passage of time will tell, but in the present, they will have their hands full with an inspired Wake Forest team coming to town. Maybe not completely inspired as they were just drummed in Tallahassee by 35.
But maybe I’ll let that game slide since it came off the emotional win the week prior over SMU. A let down was certainly in order after the ‘win it for Russ’ game.
Now, they will need to bring the focus back to the singularity of the task at hand this weekend in Charlottsville. The SMU win was great, it was special, and it carried with it a well-spring of emotion to pull the upset, but that was October 25th. This is the second weekend in November and it’s time to refocus and prepare for the game at hand. A game that from my estimation, looks winnable if Wake Forest does not beat themselves.
THE GAME
Seventy-Two Miles from Richmond, inside a packed Scott Stadium, Wake Forest will do their best to not just become bowl eligible but also play spoiler to a team that is currently in the driver’s seat to the playoffs.
I’ll highlight two players from each that I’d like to see make a game changing play.
WAKE FOREST
- SS Nick Anderson
- McNelly Award Watchlist
- LB Langston Hardy
VIRGINIA
- RB J’Mari Taylor: 816 Total Yards, 11 TD
- LB Kam Robinson
This is a game that could be an easy 28-7 or 31-10 Virginia win. Or, and this is what I want to see, it can be anyone’s ball game in the fourth and Connor Calvert will have a chance to win another game for his team late. It’s not that I’m rooting against Virginia but rather rooting for Wake Forest.
If the Deacs win in Charlottsville, 9-3 and a spot in the ACC Championship game is within their grasp. A true underdog story. Who doesn’t love a good underdog?
The Cavaliers are an underdog themselves in the grand scheme of the season, but Wake is like the Underdog’s underdog. Wouldn’t that mean Wake Forest is a puppy? How can you not root for a puppy?
Anyways, I’m hoping for a good game in this one.
—
If you find yourself in Charlottsville this weekend, consider yourself lucky. I’ve spent about 40 hours in the town and ate it up like Frosted Flakes. The Historic UVA Campus was designed and built under the specific instructions of local wealthy statesman, Thomas Jefferson, and it features many unique and borderline archaic structures. The former US President lived right down the street at the time.
It was around midnight when I strolled the campus. Completely alone except for the Security personnel who looked to be on par with the Secret Service. Not being sarcastic. The security did not consist of your average balding donut eaters, but all looked like they could be protecting the highest office in this land. The way they dressed, carried themselves, and watched me casually gave me the impression that they were a higher level of security. I’m quite sure that I had at least 2-3 red dots tracking my chest the entire time which was probably deserved considering the time I chose to visit.
Also, just about twenty minutes outside of town is Shenandoa National Park. One can imagine the expansive rolling hills of multi-colored foliage this time of year.
I’ll be looking for a reason to return before it’s all said and done.
—
- 7-1 Georgia @ 5-4 Miss St NOON ESPN
Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field will be the site for this matchup that is garnering National attention. Near perfect weather is predicted Saturday in Starkville adding to the reasons that this is a game that a fan of either team should not miss.
Overperforming their preseason expectations, the home team will be looking to upset the top5 perennial powerhouse and become bowl eligible for the first time since 2022 when Mike Leach notched nine wins, but doing so will not be easy.
—
I’ve spotted Four Home Dawgs and Four Road Dawgs to watch for in this game. Four players on each that could be the reason their team comes away victorious. AND–not one of them is Gunner Stockton. It’s very clear that this site loves QB Gunner Stockton and I’ve left him off to not sound redundant, but yes–Georgia also have Gunner Stockton playing elite at the moment.
FOUR ROAD DAWGS
- DB Daylen Everette
- DB Ellis Robinson IV
- LB CJ Allen: 5.5 TFL, 3 Sacks
- LB Chris Cole: 4 TFL, 3 Sacks
You’ll notice that all four play defense. I’ll explain in a moment why I haven’t spotlighted the offense.
FOUR HOME DAWGS
- WR Anthony Evans: 52 REC for 653 Yards and 4 TD
- Former Georgia Dawg playing for the first time against his former team.
- WR Brenen Thompson: 725 yards and 7 TD
- RB Davon Booth: 618, 9 TD
- Utah St Transfer
- QB Blake Shapen: 65% completion rate, 15 TD, 6 INT
Four offensive players for the home side and four defensive players for the away side. I’ve set it up this way because I believe that if Mississippi St can’t score with regularity, they will lose because they will not stop this UGA offense with any consistency. It will be up to the home team’s offense, which ranks 38th nationally, to keep up with the visiting Dawgs.
In my opinion, it needs to be expected that UGA scores at least 30 to 35 points against this defense that ranks in the bottom half in nearly every category. For this reason, the Four Home Dawgs and the rest of the offense need to be at their best, catch every ball, make every block, and never turn the ball over. Truly, if they can score at least 30, they will have a chance, but getting to 30 on this Georgia side will not be easy.
As is their standard MO, the Georgia defense is quite stingy only surrendering 19.7 points per game. This number is inflated due to Tennessee scoring 41 and Mississippi scoring 35–both in losses to the Bulldogs this season. Georgia scored 45 and 41 respectively and clearly know how to score with the best of them.
So, will Mississippi State be able to stop them? And if they can’t–Will they at least be able to keep up with the pace?
The answer will become clear by 2:30 CST on Saturday, but I can guarantee this–the Bulldogs win.
—
- 6-2 Tulane @ 8-1 Memphis 8:00 PM Local FRI on ESPN
Live from Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, in front of a sold-out crowd donning black, the ‘blacked out’ Memphis Tigers will take on the visiting Tulane Green Wave.
That’s right Memphis Fans–Leave the Blue in the closet for this one and be sure to wear a Johnny Cash suit or anything else that is all black. As a bonus, if you get to the game early enough, you will receive a hat that will be fitting for the Deer Stand the following morning.
With the first 2500 through the door receiving a free Camo hat and all 50,000 wearing black, it won’t quite have that magical feel that a stadium full of bright blue provides, but the energy should be at an all-time high regardless.
After all, “Uniforms are nice. Uniforms are good. I’d rather play good.” Well said by former Louisiana Head Coach Billy Napier and it applies to this game. The players uniforms and colors the fans are wearing are all well and good, but if we don’t play ‘good,’ then what’s the point? It’s all about what happens on the Gridiron. COME ON MEMPHIS FANS. Show up for the Hometown Tigers. Be there, be proud, wear black.
MEMPHIS
As it currently stands, Memphis Football are ranked 22nd in the AP, 24th by SHS, and find themselves in the field of twelve as the Group of Five representative for the College Football Playoff, so to say that there is a lot riding on each game is a gross understatement.
This Tigers team has been quite resilient this season and have mounted double digit comebacks to both South Florida and Arkansas.
-On offense, it all begins with QB Brenden Lewis. So far, he has posted 18 Total Touchdowns while only throwing four picks and, with 562 yards is the team’s leading rusher. However, when he’s not running the ball, he’s throwing it and it most likely is being caught by WR Cortez Brown.
- WR Cortez Brown: 632 Rec Yards, 7 TD
And when Lewis isn’t throwing to Brown or running it himself, he’s handing it to one of the three Tigers that can make an impact on the ground.
THREE HEADED TIGER at RB
- Sutton Smith: 594, 6 TD
- Frank Peasant: 190, 6 TD
- Greg Desrosiers: 592, 8 TD
This is the twelfth ranked offense and deservedly so with the production from so many different guys.
-On the 24th ranked scoring defense, there are four players that I’ve chosen to highlight.
DEFENSIVE IMPACT PLAYERS
- S Kamari Wilson: McNelly Award Watchlist
- DB Chris Bracy: 54 Tackles, 9.5 TFL, 7 PD, 1 INT, 1 FF/ FR
- LB Sam Brumfield: 66 Tackles, 12 TFL, 4.5 Sacks, 1 INT
- DL William Whitlow Jr: Straight up big guy energy in the middle. Intensity, but sports a big smile at times. The type of guy that is needed on the D-Line.
- 5.5 TFL, 1.5 Sack, 3 PD
Which one of these players will be the reason the Tigers win? I’ll take Kamari Wilson to continue to impress against visiting Tulane.
TULANE
There is truly not much to brag about with this team, but they are 6-2 for a reason.
On offense, it all runs through BYU transfer QB Jake Retzlaff. He’s recorded 7 Passing TD’s, only thrown 3 interceptions, is the team’s leading rusher with 513 yards, and has rushed for nine additional scores. 16 Total TD’s and counting for the former Cougar.
- FR RB Javin Gordon has 387 Yards and 4 touchdowns
On defense, the Green Wave are led by two ‘showstoppers’ in the middle of the line.
- DL Santana Hopper: 23 Tackles, 7.5 TFL, 2.5 Sack, FR
- DL Harvey Dyson III: 22 tackles, 7 TFL, 4.5 Sacks, FF
The Juniors on the D-Line will certainly be up for the scrap with Memphis tomorrow night and will do everything within their immense power to disrupt the clever Memphis offense.
Tulane is ranked 80th in Offense and Defense coming into this game, but that doesn’t mean that they will not put up a fight. In fact, I expect and welcome the fight. The Tigers need these tests to prepare themselves for the playoffs. Just win each game by one and move on. That’s it. Save the magic for the playoffs when you face off with a former National Championship team like Georgia or Alabama.
–Friday Night be ready for a fight, be ready for a test, but expect a win. A win over Tulane is required for The Hometown Tigers to accomplish something great this season. Go Tigers, GO!

So, there it is–the briefest of previews into the college football weekend. I’ll root for upsets in every game but three. Any guesses which other favorites besides the Hometown Tigers that I’m supporting?
If you said Ohio St and Georgia, you were correct. I’m rooting for these two fantastic squads to win all the way to the National Title game where we will all get the chance to see the two absolute best teams square off on the field. Isn’t that what we should all want? For the best of the best to play in the end? That’s what I want. Go Buckeyes, Go Bulldogs, Go Tigers.
