“I have lived through almost 50 pro football seasons, thus far–along with five or six major economic depressions and constant wars all over the world–but I’ll be dipped in shit if I can remember a year in the life of this nation that was played out against a bleaker and more ominous historical backdrop than we have today.”- H.S.T. 10/14/02 HEY RUBE

It’s a perfect 70 degrees today with a steady south wind and mostly clear skies. The final warm day before the next onslaught of cold winds and rain storms. The fuzzy is consistent–snoring asleep somewhere. Dierks Bentley belting about old trucks and holding on through the speaker in the drop-down-den. I’m at the kitchen bar top with my work cast across its surface.
Well, my work and the work of Doc Thompson. “Modern History from the ESPN.com Sports-Desk.” HEY RUBE is a must read for the sports lover and craver of the nostalgic. Bear in mind. it’s not all positive nostalgia. In fact, most of it isn’t, but it’s incredibly entertaining. I eat it up like Frosted Flakes.
Back to the current–you know? We had the “wettest day in Salt Lake History since 1901″ ten days ago, and now we have officially claimed the record of wettest October in Salt Lake history. That’s right. 4.16” of rain has fallen through today with a half inch or more expected tomorrow–this according to Chase Thomason of KUTV.
Unbelievable for the mountainous desert.
Here are the top ten “Wettest” Octobers in SLC history by year.
- 2025
- 1981
- 1889
- 1984
- 1946
- 1920
- 2021
- 2004
- 1876
- 1971
Yessir. It’s been dropping by the bucket load. The floodwaters haven’t quite reached Bonneville Shoreline just yet, but by the end of this month, we might be able to cast a line from Flight Park and snag a White Bass by accident.
Well, perhaps not that high, but the belts on the bellies of more than a few bridges need to keep tight. Any sagging under girth will subject to destruction from these rising creeks and rivers.
On this warm breezy day, there is barely a cloud to be seen. Tides Rise and Fall. Enjoy the present.

You know something else? There are some college football players that are producing at high level for their schools so far.
Here are the players leading the country in Total TD’s.
- Sawyer Robertson 20 Baylor
- Josh Hoover 20 TCU
- Sorsby 19 Cinci
- Daniels 19 KU
- Mendoza 19 IU
- Joseph 19 ODU
- Simpson 18 Bama
- Fifita 18 AZ
- Barnes 18 USU
- Brown 18 USF
- Bonus: Air Force QB Liam Szarka has 16. Dude is a baller. Taysom Hill like.
- Extra bonus–Hoover is in the top 10 in INT as well with 6.
The top four being Big12 schools could be proof of the defensive talent gap between this conference and the Big TWO. Conference to conference should not be compared apples to apples.

Another position group that caught my eye this morning when I was scrolling the stat sheets was the kickers. There are eleven Kickers that have yet to miss this season. Here are those that to this point are flawless kickers, starting with the number one kicker in all the land:
- Kansai Matsuzawa- Hawaii
- 19 Made Kicks. The most of any other kicker
- Laith Marjan- Kansas
- Stephen Rusnak- Cinci
- Patrick Durkin- Tulane
- Nicolas Radicic- Indiana
- Luke Drzewiecki- New Mexico
- Upton Bellenfant- Texas Tech
- Luca Combardo- Boston College
- Kian Afrookhteh- Coastal Carolina
- Garrison Smith- FL Atlantic
- Gabriel Plascencia- San Diego St
Pretty sure only one of those names came over on the shallop in 1607 and it ain’t Radicic.
Outstanding job to all these perfect kickers. 100Pct for the season. Who can remain on the list the longest? I’m rooting for Matsuzawa. 19/19 is tremendous.

So that’s it. A quick word about the weather and a couple of Top 10ish lists. It’s Tuesday afternoon and the sunshine is beaming across the land. Except in LA–and Tokyo if you want to look that far around the globe. Let’s enjoy the day.
“At least the Super Bowl will be better, bigger, and faster than the World Series.”- HST 10/14/02
Twenty-three years later and the Tides still rise and fall.
