UHSAA FOOTBALL: QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

It’s Saturday morning. The Round Game is in full swing, and the Saturday Game will be underway in about half an hour, but I wanted to quickly update the UHSAA Quarterfinal results before the day gets too far away from me.

It was a fun night at Skyridge.

5A QUARTERFINALS

  • Bountiful 3 @ West 14
  • Box Elder 21 @ Springville 28
  • Brighton 27 @ Fremont 14
    • UPSET!
  • Woods Cross 7 @ Orem 35

5A Semifinals: Played at Rice Eccles 11/13 starting at 11:00

  • West vs Orem
  • Springville vs Brighton

6A QUARTERFINALS

  • Lone Peak 41 @ Davis 38 (2OT)

GAME of the YEAR candidate!

The #1 Quarterback in the land, Tradon Bessinger tossed his fair share of touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough.

Lone Peak QB Kepa rushed in a touchdown in the final thirty seconds of regulation to tie the game and send it to OT where Jake Barker eventually kicked the Game Winning field goal. Barker scored the first points and last points of the game as the game that ended high scoring began innocently enough 3-3.

This was a game that I wrote ‘could be 49- 48 by the end,’ and that was a semi close prediction. Definitely a game that would’ve been worth watching.

Well Done Lone Peak!

  • Syracuse 14 @ Corner Canyon 56

Corner cruising once again.

  • Herriman 14 @ Mountain Ridge 22

Herriman played their local rivals close but could not overcome the stingy home defense. A game that I dubbed would be a ‘toss up’ turned out to be exactly that.

  • American Fork 29 @ Skyridge 56

Wow! Some players certainly stood above the rest for me last night.

It goes without saying that when Sweetwyne is comfortable he is as crisp as any other QB I’ve seen this year and last night was no exception. A tremendous effort by the Skyridge QB.

He threw three touchdowns to Talmage Oswald who consistently beat his man or found the weak spot in the zone and never dropped a ball. Oswald was on fire especially in the first half.

Safety Briggs Parker brought the entire stadium and the grassy knoll surrounding it to its feet with a first half Punt Return for a touchdown. The blocking sealed the first 20-25 yards or so–#1 took care of the rest.

Luke Barrus is a fearless pad-popper, and he put his tenacity on display several times last night. All form tackle, clean hits, but with unwavering purpose. The Outside Linebacker seemed to be everywhere.

And speaking of pad-poppers and being everywhere, Mike Linebacker, Griffin Kunz has the lighting quick instincts of a striking jungle cat. Swift, purposeful, meant to accomplish the goal, and do damage to the opponent. Damage in the football sense: disrupt, cause chaos, force a turnover, etc. Not ‘do damage’ in terms of injure. #0 was one of my favorite players on the night.

Well done, Skyridge!

-Out of the nine or ten stadiums I’ve visited, Skyridge is my second favorite place to watch a ball game in Utah.

You want to know my first? “Lavell Edwards Stadium. The most scenic stadium in the world.” That is how much I enjoy watching a football game from the grassy hill that encloses the stadium. Bring a chair or a leather sofa and enjoy the game. Someone had a couch last night in the south endzone. Genius.

NOW, to the next round.

6A Semifinal Matchups: Played at Rice-Eccles 11/14 Starting at 11:00
