So, that is where things stood on 6/30/2025 at 7:09AM MST, but a lot has changed since then. Games have been played, teams have been exposed, injuries have happened, and this can make for quite the sample size. I mean, a four-week sample size is only a third of the season, but it’s certainly a third more than we had back in June when I assembled this list.

So, hopefully this first Top33 of the season will reflect the team’s true potential. Clearly, I was wrong about Kansas St, Oregon St, and Clemson, but we now know what we didn’t and can move on.

Most likely, I will be releasing a Top33ish after each week to attempt to further separate the fraudulent from the for real playoff contenders. By the end of the season, I will have it narrowed down to the top 16 which will account for the twelve playoff teams and the first four to miss. Also, it’s the number of teams that will be in the College Football playoff in the 2026/27 season.

My opinion has been for a very long time that the rankings do not matter. Simply win. Keep winning and you will make the playoffs. This is especially true with this playoff format. To borrow from Coach Napier, rankings ‘are nice.’ Rankings ‘are good’. Coaches would rather team’s play good and prove it on the field.

However, rankings are fun for dummies like me to ponder throughout the season and certainly necessary in the final few weeks to decide who is where. So without further delay, the following is how I rank the top33 College football teams after Week 4:

  • After Week 4 Top 33:
  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio St
  3. Penn St
  4. Oregon
  5. Miami
  6. LSU
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Southern Cal
  9. Tennessee (One Loss: Georgia)
  10. FSU
  11. Texas A&M
  12. Washington
  13. Alabama (One Loss: Florida St)
  14. Mississippi
  15. Texas Tech
  16. Indiana
  17. Georgia Tech
  18. Iowa St
  19. Louisville
  20. Texas (One Loss: Ohio St)
  21. Memphis
  22. South Florida (One Loss: Miami)
  23. Mississippi St
  24. Notre Dame (Two Losses: Miami, Texas A&M)
  25. Missouri
  26. Vanderbilt
  27. Arizona
  28. BYU
  29. Michigan (One Loss: Oklahoma)
  30. Auburn (One Loss: Oklahoma)
  31. Arizona St (One Loss: Miss St)
  32. Maryland
  33. TCU

With more than half a season still in front of us, there is still time for someone to prove their worth and to be listed higher or lower than they are now. For now, this will suit just fine.

Georgia, Penn St, Oregon, and Ohio St look the best on paper and certainly have played the best on the field, but all have Cat 5 hurricane level matchups this week. UGA/ BAMA, PSU/ ORE, OSU/ WASH. These are massive games, but whether these teams win or lose, I’d still take them over anyone else the following week given that each is fully healthy.

This is the first ranking of the season. I’m sure to tighten this list as the season progresses.
