McNelly Award Watch: Texas A&M @ Notre Dame

“After that only death could prevent my following Captain McNelly.”- George Durham

quote from FOLLOW ME TO HELL by Tom Clavin

Hopefully, at this point you’ve purchased and read this book along with every other book on the Old West that Tom Clavin has authored. They are all worth it. If not, it’s ok. I’ll continue dropping quotes from it as the Inaugural Season of the McNelly Award continues.

It’s up to me to pick who embodies Leander from back in 1870’s Texas when he led the Texas Rangers against the lawless ruffians that plagued the state at the time, and this is not a decision to take lightly. Leadership, performance, and courage will be required by whomever finally takes this award home in January.

It’s anyone’s award to win at this point.

There are Two McNelly Award Watchlist players to watch in this game. Both teams are stacked at defensive back, but two shine above the rest and caught my attention in the preseason.

  • Will “The Blanket” Lee III
    • Texas A&M CB 6’3/190
  • Leonard Moore
    • Notre Dame CB 6’0/186

Both of these players are elite at their position and are respected and trusted by their teammates. Let’s watch as they dual each other in South Bend Saturday night and watch as they progress as individuals throughout the season both on the field and in the locker room. Leadership will matter as that was what made Leander McNelly great. That and his infinite courage he displayed in the face of the ruthless enemies across the Texas plains.

Good luck to both young men. Only up.

The McNelly Award top contenders list will be out after Week 6 along with Heisman Trophy candidates.
