Expect the Unexpected: going 4-0 on MNF

The Bears just dismantled the Patriots and no one predicted it. No one!!

After going 2-5 Saturday and 2-1 Sunday on football bets, I was looking to close the week on a strong note.  All day I was trying to put together the perfect combo of picks or home in on that one pick to make a good profit tonight.  At one point I had 5 bets picked and they all had to do with the Patriots covering and the under hitting.  I felt really good about it and even considered playing “no td scored” at 55/1 just to be the cherry on top of what I thought would be a 19-6 Pats win.  For no reason, instead of hitting submit to place the wager, I cancelled all of them, put on a podcast, and went on a run.  This podcast guaranteed a Patriots cover and the under to be absolute plays of the year.  Of course this boosted my confidence in the picks I was considering, so I was going to put in for the 5 that I liked when I got back.  As fate would have it, it was only a short podcast, so I put on another show to finish the run.  This group of guys came a similar conclusion as the other podcast—the Pats and the under are guaranteed.  Of course, my high brain on a run was thinking RED ALERT after hearing this.  My worry was that these two different shows with zero affiliation with each other used almost verbatim the exact same words when describing the outcome of this game.  I tuned into a few more podcasts and football shows to get their takes after my run and I kept hearing the same thing—Pats and the Under.  I usually only listen to 2 football shows consistently, but today I had to know if “everyone” was feeling the same thing to confirm my decision to back off, place zero bets, and call it a losing weekend…

Until, 4 minutes before the kick, listening to Lil Wayne, I got this feeling.  It was like a flash of the entire NFL season flashed before my eyes in about 3 seconds.  The Chiefs lost to the Colts in week 3, the Seahawks are winning the NFC West, the Panthers trade their best player and dominate the divisional favorite Bucs, AND the CHIEFS LOST TO THE COLTS IN WEEK 3!!!  I mean how does this elite team lose to this flaccid, lifeless Colts team?  That penalty on Big 95 (CEO of sack nation) was an embarrassment to the sport and shouldn’t have happened, but it did.  There isn’t any logical reason any of this should have happened, but it happened, nonetheless.

So, I wagered Bears +8.5, the over 40, and bears -3.5 at 6/1 for the cherry on top simply because this NFL season has been as confusing as a fart in a fan factory and why the hell not.  Nothing makes sense, so why wouldn’t this work?  The game played out perfectly.  Bears go up 10-0 early, and once the Pats put Zappe in, I bought extra on the over 41.5 which paid off but not for the reasons I thought it would.  Basically, I went 4-0 on this Monday night and profited 9 units because I picked everything I thought wouldn’t happen.

Maybe that’s how we should go about gambling this football season.  Maybe I will only be disciplined and only wager when I see these moments through the smoke screen.  Nope! I will keep firing away every week, but the lesson is learned: Expect the unexpected.

Wager for fun not to retire.
