College Football Predictions: Week 2

“Well cut my legs off and call me shorty…”- Chris Mannix “Hateful Eight”

“Well cut my legs off and call me shorty,” the lion’s share of College Football Week One is in the books and we are off to week number two. Virginia Tech plays South Carolina shortly and Notre Dame travels to Miami for Sunday Night Football, remember Irish 29-27 was the pick. Not that it matters since this site lost 60 pct of the time this weekend.

It’s all good. It always is when it’s just for fun. Losing certainly hurts less when it’s for free. Winning is sweeter with a payoff, but who troubles themselves with winning every week when picking losers is so much easier? At least, that was the case this week.

WEEK ONE: TEN FRESH PICKS:

  • Syracuse +13 L
  • Penn St -44 L
  • Marshall +39.5 W
  • UTEP +4 L
  • GA Southern +2.5/ S/U L
  • Colorado St +20.5 W
  • Arizona -14.5 W
  • Tulane -6.5 W
  • Coastal/ UVA OVER 57.5 L
    • 48-7
  • Miss St/ S. Miss OVER 60.5 L
    • 34-17

RECORD:

  • WEEK: 4-6
  • Year: 4-6

Penn St held back in a major way and simultaneously Nevada played much tougher than I expected after that long bus ride across the nation. The Nittany Lion’s are very strong this year, but I think they were surprised by QB Chubba Purdy’s speed. Purdy will keep Nevada in games this year and I think they can make waves in the Mountain West.

Both Coastal and Southern Miss failed to score enough and cost the over in both of the games. Miss St and UVA scored about what I expected

Coach Brennan had Arizona prepared for their season opener. Hawaii looked lost. 40-6 was the final. 32-12 was the prediction.

Tulane decimated Northwestern. 23-3 was the final. 30-3 was the prediction.

Georgia did enough to dominate and win comfortably against Marshall at home. 45-7 was the final. 38-0 was the prediction.

Some picks, spot on; others, miles off. Some things never change.

Before getting to the picks, I’d like to say that the most impressive team I watched this weekend was Penn St. Holy smokes. What a squad. This is a team built to last and by far the best team James Franklin has coached. Georgia would be the second most impressive team of the weekend.

Week Two: Ten Fresh Picks:

  • Iowa +1.5
    • @Iowa St at Noon on FOX
  • Kentucky +11.5
    • @Mississippi at 1:30 on ABC
  • Kansas +5.5
    • @Mizzou at 1:30 on Espn2
  • Western Michigan +9.5 S/U+280
    • North Texas at 1:30 on Espn+
  • Michigan +6.5
    • @Oklahoma at 5:30 on ABC
  • VA Tech -3 (19-12)
    • Vandy at 5:30 on ACC Net
  • GA St +13.5
    • Memphis at 5:00 on Espn+
  • ASU/ MSU UNDER 59.5
    • @Miss St at
  • Cincinatti/ Bowling Green OVER 49.5
    • @Cincinatti at 1:30 on Espn+
  • UCLA/ UNLV OVER 55.5
    • @UNLV at 6:00 on CBSSN

The following are favorites in their games, and I see them winning, but the margins are thin as the air atop Lone Peak.

Straight up winners:

  • SMU over Baylor
  • Illinois over Duke
  • Washington St over San Diego St
  • NC St over UVA

All of these picks are more likely to lose than win, but hey, why play if you’re not going to take a few chances. Truth is–no one knows. Even you. Especially me, so do not take this too seriously. “Football is just a game doc, but I love it.”- Coach Boone

I love this sport. Less than I used to, but I still love College Football the most. Always have, it appears that I always will. It’s back and it’s up to me and you to keep the passion and traditions alive. This sport and the joy and pain it provides is not for us to squander or hoard–it’s for those who are left behind when we are gone. Pass along the memories, pass along the passion, live your truth, and leave this sport better than you found it. This is a challenge to remove the ego and progress with the sport as it transitions from traditional college football to the new age semi-pro minor league football league that it appears to be now. There is still plenty to get excited about if you want to find it.

Either love it, or don’t. If you don’t, move along to something else and stop dragging others down with your soppin’ wet blanket takes. It’s football. It’s about fun. Life is the same–“never take life so seriously. No one gets out alive.”

Well, would you look at that–Notre Dame lost 24-27. Yeah, don’t take these games too seriously. It’s about fun and it will be for the rest of time.
