CFB WEEK 5 Pick Sheet (Picks)

“Here you go, create another fable, you wanted to”- SOAD

I hope the work week has been kind to you. If not, thanks for stopping by for a Dose of sports to help cure the boredom.

Picks incoming, but first, a look back in time. A full decade ago.

This day in history. Army 43 @ Yale 49 September 27, 2014. The legend of Tyler Varga was born.

After being born in Sweden to a Finnish Mother and a Croatian Father, and raised in Canada, he found himself in the Apizza (ah-beetz) capital of the world, New Haven, Connecticut, starting at Fullback for the Bulldogs of Yale.

In the historic home win, Varga rushed for 185 yards on 28 carries and not 1, not 2, not 3…FIVE touchdowns. He scored his Fourth on a 10-yard blast with 1:42 remaining to tie the game, and then his Fifth was a three-yard run in OT to win the game. Legend.

He had a brief stint with the Colts in 2015 before retiring a year later. It looks like he caught 1 pass for 18 yards that season. Better than most. Damn. 2014 was a decade ago. Where’s the Basil?

I found an interview conducted by 519 Sports during 2020, and in it, Tyler said that his former Head Coach at the Indianapolis Colts, Chuck Pagano (Coach P) described him as “Grit.” That’s it. “Grit.” What else would you want from a legend College Football Fullback from Yale?

No more distractions. Let’s pick some games.

Last night Army dismantled Temple by 4 scores to kickoff Chapter 5 of the 2024 College Football Story.

In just a few hours, the mighty Hurricanes will host the Hokies of Virginia Tech, and it is the first game on the sheet I posted for this week.

Miami has impressed me so far. Explosive on offense and disciplined on defense and have played like a true top ten team. That said, I like the Hokies. The close game at home will be a necessary wake up call for the ACC favorites.

No need for me to get long winded about my reasoning for all of my picks. Like you, I have my opinions and strategies when picking games, and like you, I lose at least 50.1pct of the time. It’s ok. That’s why we Wager for fun, not to retire, or better yet just pick games for fun. Football is fun after all. Isn’t it? Oh shit. Having a Petey moment.

Suddenly Coach Boone is sternly booming in my ear, “it’s fun. You sure?” and I’m Petey responding shamefully, “zero fun sir.” Well, watching football is fun. Except the commercials, but YouTube TV Quad Box helps alleviate most of those issues.

Anyways, enough is enough. No more stalling. Here are the picks that are as likely to win as they are to lose.

Like the star burning bright, in the daylight, I rise and fall.

All times eastern.

Remember two things if you follow along:

  1. I know as much or as little as the next guy
  2. Wager for fun, not to retire

If I had to give one real pick: Kentucky +17.5. 36-19 final sounds close enough.

Let’s enjoy the weekend. I’ll be watching along with you. Maybe I’ll fire this machine up during a game and record some live thoughts. Georgia game seems like the logical one, but UCF/ Colorado is tempting.

Oh yeah, one final word.

Fight on you Fighting Scots against The Rock. Longshot.

Find the Humor and keep on Movin’
