An Australian in Aloha Country

Coach “Do you like football?” Kid: No

Coach “You ever played football?” Kid: No

Coach: “You want to play football?” Kid: No.

Coach: “Great you can be on our team.”

“Little Giants” 1994

A brief peek.

A 29 years young owner of a Barbershop in Australia decided that his athletic career was far from complete. Billy Gowers, a former Australian Football League Goal Kicker enters into his freshman season for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors as he reignites his dream of one day kicking in the NFL. A fortuitous roster opening at the punter position led to his opportunity that he will soon not let go.

He’s booming 70+ yard punts in practice, cutting the coaches hair for free, and helping his fellow freshman as they adjust to the grown-up world. A world the near thirty-year-old has lived in for more than a decade longer than his classmates. “Uncle Billy” as he is surely known in the locker room, prioritizes serving his team in any way he can. On 4th down, former Hawaii QB and now Head Coach Timmy Chang will hope he can flip fields and pin opponents consistently.

Hawaii play host to Stanford this Saturday 8/23 and kickoff at 1:30 local time on CBS. That’s 5:30 here in the mountainous Utah desert.

Look at that. A post that reads in shorter time than a world class punt’s hangtime. Just a peek…
