Live Thoughts with Whit: 9/6

Oregon is knocking the stuffing out of the Cowboys from Oklahoma St. 34-3 with one minute left until halftime. Speed and length. Oregon is blessed with an abundance in both. Dan Lanning has been building quite the titanic team of lightning quick skill players, explosive defensive lineman and speedy DB’s with ‘go-go gadget arms.’

Oklahoma St is simply overmatched in this game, but to be fair that will be the case for most teams this season. That said, the Cowboys need to improve in many areas and quick. It just so happens that the Number One high school player in Arkansas, Danny Beale, and the Number One player in Oklahoma, Tajh Overton are both Cowboy bound next season. Both explosive defensive lineman that will certainly make an impact as early as next season.

Halftime now. 41-3. Mike Gundy looks like he’s interviewing for his tv analyst job next season. He should. People love him.

On paper, Oregon looked like one of the best four teams in the country. Now that I’m seeing them for the first time, the paper is proving true. Oregon is a tank. Sure, they may lose one or two games, but they will make the playoffs and once they’re in, they’ll have what it takes to win a game or two at least. At least that’s how things look through my lens on this blessed rainy day in the desert. We always love a good rain.

Say, while Oregon is at half I’ll check in on a few more games from earlier.

Illinois destroyed Duke by 26, Baylor beat SMU by 3 in Overtime, and some Texas teams won by 50. Currently, there are a handful of games delayed due to weather. Earlier Rutgers and Miami(OH) were delayed 90 minutes due to high winds and torrential rains, and right now both Clemson and Georgia both have their home fields getting severe weather.

West Virginia isn’t experiencing severe weather in Athens, OH but their football team would love to have that excuse. The Mountaineers are down 17-7 at half to Ohio University. This was always going to be a more challenging road game than the name implies, but I expect the Mountaineers and their Pedigree to win at places like this. Rich Rod is trying to work his magic with a hatful of wildcards. I believe in Rich Rod. West Virginia Football will return to greatness. Maybe.

In other news, my prediction for the Rutgers game was 24-6 in their favor. Right now, it’s 24-10 in their favor, but at the half, so I must’ve undershot this projection a bit….Oregon is back. They’ve scored touchdowns in seven of their eight drives so far today. This team of Ducks is elite.

Holy smokes…Troy is beating the peel of the Clemson Orange. 16-0 approaching halftime. The Tigers lost last week to LSU. If they drop this one to Troy, and fall to 0-2 it’ll be the end of Clemson’s playoff chances and maybe the end of Dabo’s run at Clemson. Still more than a half to go, so maybe Clemson can battle back against the Trojans. On paper, they can. On paper, they should win this game 44-16 at a minimum, which ironically is still nearly possible. We’ll see what happens.

Pick SIX! Oregon up 62-3 as the third quarter winds to a close. The Ducks are built with length and speed. Like a Calipari Memphis tiger team. Robert Dozier, Antonio Anderson, and CDR with the speed of Tyreek Hill and football skills of Deion in his Prime–that’s who is in this Oregon secondary. They are everywhere and cover everything. The Ducks are just fast everywhere.

And…Another Pick SIX for the Ducks! The very next play. 27 seconds to go in the third quarter and it’s 69-3. Good gracious. Oregon and Penn State is going to be a good one. Let’s get to September 27th. That game will be one of the best of the season. And a true test for each team. For now, I’m super high on both of these teams. Penn St blanked FIU 36-0 earlier in a less than desirable way. I think it was them simply taking their time and working on situational type things rather than worrying about running up the score.

James Franklin knows this team could’ve put up 70, but what would that gain them in the long run? Simply, get the comfortable W, work on the little things, and continue to get better every day as they prepare for the Ducks in three weeks, the grind that is the BIG10 season, and their potential playoff run. They would’ve gained nothing by winning by any more than they did. The Nittany Lions are just fine.

Time to smash a burger. It’s 4:36 MST. Football is on my TV and rain is falling outside. It’s a great day to be alive.

Bacon burger with mustard and onion. Smashed. Let’s keep this going…5:04.

Clemson down 16-3 at the half, so there is still plenty of time for the 44-16 on paper score prediction to manifest. Well done to Troy so far. Truly. The Trojans are outperforming what I believed was their potential this season and good for them.

Let’s look at some other high performing teams:

  • Georgia won 28-6 over Austin Peay
  • Ohio St won 70-0 over Grambling St
  • And Florida St won 77-3 over East Texas A&M

Nothing surprising there. Big matchups upcoming for each of these teams.

In the current games:

  • Ole Miss is holding the pesky Wildcats from Kentucky 27-20 with about two left in the game
  • Clemson is on the comeback trail. Just took the lead 17-16.
  • Florida is up one at home 16-15 with their rivals from Tampa.
    • “The Swamp is gettin’ rowdy and so am I.”- Billy Napier
  • Utah is winning 21-6 over Cal Poly in the second quarter.

And nothing else of note that I see. Boston College is about to take on Michigan St in East Lansing, the Hometown Tigers are near kickoff with Georgia St in Atlanta, Bryce Underwood and the Wolverines are about to take on the Sooners in Norman, and a slew of other games. Tonight will be a packed one. I’m here for it. Maybe not all of it.

BYU kicks at 10:15 Eastern and Hawaii kicks at Midnight. It’ll be a late night for football fans and degenerates.

The most disappointing result was in the North Texas/ Western Michigan game. The Broncos led late in the game but lost it in overtime. I picked them +9.5 but also straight up to pull the upset. So close.

Time to settle in and watch a little football. 5:28
