Reno to Happy Valley: By Bus or by Air

Reno to Happy Valley, PA

By bus with a team of rotating drivers it’s going to take 36-38 hours to make this journey, so it’s important to get the boys on the road by at least Thursday evening to make sure their unloading and stretching by 10 on Gameday. Everyone pack plenty of salt water and snacks,

“We are only stopping for fuel. Anyone not back on the bus win the tank’s full is getting left. I don’t care if you’re Bailey Ettridge or AJ Odums, you’ll be hiking to Happy Valley if you’re late.” -Sweaty bus Driver with brawny forearms

He sounds serious to me. Better pack extra snacks and plenty of underwear. Just in case. Oh, and certainly do not be like Hunter and drink and smoke on the bus. Times have changed since the 70’s.

Now, there will be a much more realistic way to get to Happy Valley at the end, but for now, let’s take the long journey from Reno to Happy Valley by bus.

From Reno find I-80 and head East. Reno to Winnemucca to Elko through Wendover, past the Salt Flats (those on the left side of the bus will get the best pictures), across the Salt Lake Desert through Salt Lake City onto Cheyenne to Lincoln, to Joliet, ILL, to Portage, IN, through Fighting Irish country, across the Meander Creek Reservoir, and crossing into Western Pennsylvania just South of Sharon. From here it’s on to Emlenton across the Allegheny River, past Falls Creek south of Treasure and Bimini Lakes, straight on past Clearfield Lawrence Airport, across the West Branch Susquehanna River to Snow Shoe, Runville Rd, to Lucas, to MacNamara Rd and finally, Happy Valley, PA.

Now, if you find yourself in the middle of a lush, contoured valley without a university building or football stadium in sight, you’re not lost. You are just not in the correct place…this is Happy Valley, PA just north of Moose Run. Breathe in the fresh air of the Pennsylvania wilderness for a moment, then get back on the bus. Don’t worry. You’re less than half an hour from University Park, Beaver Stadium, and “Happy Valley.”

Take MacNamara Dr to Moose Run Rd and follow it along Moose Run Creek into Central City. Now, from here you can stay straight on Moose Run Rd which turns into HWY 144. It crosses Bald Eagle Creek into Milesburg, through Bellefonte to I-99. Drive a blink or two then exit down Park Ave and make a simple left on Porter Rd.

But since the shortest route is probably preferred due to this insanely long drive from Reno, take Moose Run Rd into Central City and take a left onto 220/150 and follow it a short distance NE to I-80. I-80 will follow Nittany Creek to the I-99 JCT. Catch I-99 South past Spring Township, on to Park Ave, then Porter, where the Penn St Nittany Lions await.

Wolfpack athletes will have a few hours to stretch the legs and get the sweaty flatulent bus smell out of their hair before the early afternoon kickoff.

Or, 6 1/2 hours of travel time if one flies into State College from Reno. By Air. That’s the obvious choice in this one.

  • A Prediction

I don’t see Nevada showing any resistance against the Nittany Lions and it has nothing to do with the travel. If Penn St were to drive their team bus across the country to Reno, I’d still back them by 40+ points. Penn St is ready for this one. Nevada is as well, but there will be certain limiting factors that will render this team useless against such a superior squad. Penn St 52-0 is how I see it.
