General Update: 8/24

Sweet Mary Lou. What a nice break in temperature it is here in the desert. Even a sprinkle or two fell throughout the day. In fact, across the mainland, cool temps will be felt this week. What a reprieve. Lows will be in the 50’s for the middle of the country which is a nearly 25 degree drop from where they have been…Just in time for College Football week one.

This weekend saw college football tease the fanbase with an abbreviated slate yesterday. Just enough to make one want more. Well Bucko, more is on the way.

We still had a lively sports weekend with all the different forms of football. Even an NFL game on Friday Night that featured the ‘new look’ Titans and the conclusion of the golf season just moments ago.

GOLF

  • Tour Championship

Golfers and patrons dodged plump raindrops throughout the weekend, but today the rain cleared, and the sunshine returned. East Lake’s greens handled the weather well and seemed to maintain their integrity while naturally slowing down a touch. Cantlay, Scheffler, and Connors made good runs this weekend, but Tommy Fleetwood bested them all. His first win ever on tour, and what a big win it was.

A Ten Million Dollar first prize and a FedEx Cup Championship. Not bad for your first PGA Tour win. Tommy has always been a Steak Sauce human on and off the golf course–this was a long time coming. Justin Rose was waiting at the end to celebrate with his countryman. Another A-1 individual that this site has been a fan of for a long, long time. Maybe next year I’ll write more on golf.

But this wraps the Golf season until a few weeks before the Masters 2026 for this site. The Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black September 26-28. Let’s go USA. Coach Keegan Bradley will lead the team.

“I love coming to work everyday.”- Tommy Fleetwood (A modern day Robin of Loxley)

Friday Night Lights:

Switching gears to the high school gridiron.

  • Corner Canyon 38 @ West Broward (FL) 13
    • Storms, lightning, wind, rain…Florida weather delayed the game by nearly two hours, but Corner Canyon won comfortably once the game kicked.
    • This was West Broward’s season opener, and it showed especially in the secondary.
    • Casuga aired out several deep balls for completions to barely covered receivers due to some confusion in coverage.
    • I paid attention to the entire second half as the game was streamed in good quality through the West Broward Athletics website.
  • Fremont 35 @ Davis 34
    • Unbelievable game.
    • Fremont scored 21 consecutive points to tie the game and send it to OT. “Junior LB Jack Masters and WR Moa were relentless in their effort” according to KSL who was on site for the game in Kaysville.
      • Moa threw a TD and caught a TD
    • In OT, Davis scored a touchdown on their first possession but missed the PAT due to a poor snap. Likewise, Fremont scored a touchdown on their first possession, but the Silverwolves converted their PAT to win by one on the road.
    • Davis QB and Boise St commit Tradon Bessinger continued his elite QB play.
      • After passing for 5 touchdowns last week at Brighton to open the year, he added 4 Passing Td’s and 1 Rushing in the loss.
    • Fremont host Corner Canyon this upcoming Friday at 7
  • Orem 21 @ Lone Peak 34
    • The battle of #1 in 5A @ #2 in 6A
    • Lone Peak showed their quality and found themselves leading 14-0 after six minutes of gametime due to a 69 yard pick six followed by an 82 yard touchdown pass to half of the “Pula Twins” (Jaron)
    • Lone Peak will travel to Timpview Friday at 7 and Will have Idaho St commit Kepa Niumeitolu back at QB as his two game suspension has been served. This suspension was for his ejection from the State Championship game last year when he received an unsportsmanlike penalty after rushing in his third touchdown late in the game. Lone Peak fell late to Corner Canyon (30-27) to end the season.

Premier League

Arsenal hosted newly promoted Leeds United yesterday.

Leeds United @ Arsenal 10:30 Peacock

Arsenal Lineup:

  • GK Raya
  • RB Timber
  • CB Saliba
  • CB Gabriel
  • LB Caliafori
  • CM Zubimendi
  • CM Rice
  • CM Odegaard
  • RW Saka
  • ST Gyokeres
  • LW Madueke
    • BENCH:
      • White
      • Trossard
      • Nwaneri
      • Skelly
      • Martinelli
      • Mosquera
      • Max Dowman
        • First professional bench start. Age:15
          • yes 15! The air looks clear out this young man’s windshield as he paves his future. Best of luck Max.
        • Newly signed Eberechi Eze in the stands

Arsenal dominated the game. Timber and Gyokeres each netted a brace, and Saka added a goal just before half. This led to a relatively easy 5-0 home win. Another three points for the Gunners. Mosquera and Dowman both subbed in and played nearly thirty minutes for their team debuts. Dowman stole the show late in the game as he won Arsenal a penalty just before the game went final. The fifteen year old English born lad has elite quickness and seems to play without fear. How much more will this young man grow?

The young talent in this Arsenal squad is abundent. Arsenal are building to be great for a long time!

Injuries to Odegaard and Saka dampen the mood a bit, but hopefully they will recover soon. The captain landed awkwardly on his shoulder and left the game, but not before the passing the captain’s arm band to Saka who aggravated a hamstring minutes later.

Next week the Gunners will travel to Anfield for a bout with the 2024/25 champs at 9:30.

Sunderland:

  • After dishing struggling West Ham a 3-0 loss to open the season, the Black Cats went on the road to also recently promoted Burnley where they fell flat 2-0.
    • Away from home this team will need to find their form. I still believe that inside the Stadium of Light they will be formidable against any opponent
    • Sunderland have a quick turn around as they host Huddersfield in the Second Round of the League Cup at 12:45 on Paramount+
      • They will host Brentford next Saturday at 8 on Peacock.

OTHER SOCCER:

Sheffield Wednesday 2 @ Wrexham 2

Wrexham still has yet to record a win at the Championship level. After dropping their first two games, they opened with two goals in front of a relatively sparse and visibly unlively home Wrexham crowd to go up two nil. Sheffield Wednesday’s away crowd that was quite audible throughout the game were treated to two second half goals to earn an ‘Away’ point.

  • Wrexham Striker Kieffer Moore footed two goals past the keeper in the first half hour
    • This big lug is going to be a force for any center back to cover.
    • The 33 year old 6’5 Striker looked ‘head and shoulders’ taller and better than the Sheffield Wednesday defenders.
    • As long as he is healthy, he will get goals at the Championship level.
  • Wrexham also turn around quick and travel to Preston for their second round League Cup match. Also at 12:45 on Paramount+

Lazio 0 @ Como 2

  • Cesc had his young energetic squad up and ready for this one. I love this Como teams’ style of play. Relentless pace, relentless pressure. Another win for the home side on the banks of the Lago di Como.
    • Every Como 1907 game can be seen on Paramount+

NFL

Mullings Report:

  • Kalel went down in the second half of the Friday Night preseason game against the Vikings and did not return after an awkward tackle caused him to roll his ankle. The Titans were giving him chances to show his worth throughout the game. Rookie QB Cam Ward hit him over the middle in stride and Kalel caught and ran with it the way any elite slot receiver would. It’s probably what impressed me the most out of what he contributed. He was running across the middle and showed elite hands to secure the ball that was crisply thrown by the future MVP of the league. I’m assuming. Ward can deliver a ball that’s for sure.
    • Hoping Kalel recovers quickly and can secure a place in this Running Back lineup which includes Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears.
    • The word is “won’t miss significant time.”

Notable College Football Scores:

  • Iowa St 24 – Kansas St 21
  • Fresno St 7@ Kansas 31
  • Stanford 20 @ Hawaii 23
  • Idaho St 31 @ UNLV 38
    • Lone Peak QB Kepa committed to help the Bengal’s next season. Although, offense doesn’t appear to be their issue.

College Football will be back Thursday at 3:30 as Boise State takes on South Florida in Tampa. Next weekend, everyone plays. Next weekend, there may be more to say.

Congrats to Tommy Fleetwood on his Tour Championship! August 24th is a special day. One he will remember forever, kind of like me. The years go by like a comet in the sky, a dozen years ago today, I married my bride. Her favorite golfer–Tommy Fleetwood. That guy has been her favorite for years. Sometimes, it’s meant to be. Kind of like me marrying this amazing woman that loves to watch sports even more I do. Yeah, sometimes it’s just meant to be.
