Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Cincinatti Bearcats
9:00PM EST on ESPN August 28
Arrowhead Stadium
“He came with the name Cincinnati
A kid with no ace in the hole
On a hot poker pot, Cincinnati
Had staked his heart and soul
He played night and day like a demon
And prayed for that one lucky day
When the lush royal flush of his dreaming
Is just a game away
Beyond all the green felt shadows
His own queen of hearts will wait
But till he’s king of the green felt shadows
She’ll wait, and wait, and wait
For sure as the cards will be falling
And chips in the pot, he’ll remain
For the book lady luck will be calling”
Ray Charles “Cincinatti Kid”
Late one summer night, nearly moonless in Kansas City, two young hotheaded gunslingers crossed paths at 1 Arrowhead Dr. One a simple cornhusker from Lincoln. The other a city kid from Cincinatti. Both confident and full of self-belief. Neither interested in a simple salutation, allowing tensions to swell like the Blue River during a three-day monsoon.
A battle soon began just West of Blue Ridge Cutoff. Although the sun had been set for hours, friends rallied to their aid. 10 paired with the Cornhusker, another 10 sided with the Kid. Nothing at stake but the pride in their hearts; it’s really that simple and all it takes for a battle to start.
A crowd soon appeared, most clad in Scarlet and cream. They rallied behind the Cornhuskers, acting like a third team. The Kid from Cincinatti became overwhelmed and tried to negotiate a peace, but–it was too late.
The Cornhuskers knew victory was theirs; it was a blood bath in the Kansas City Street…the Kid settled in for one last final sleep.
In less dramatic terms, Nebraska wins by 4 scores over the Bearcats in the late summer overnight battle in Kansas City.
44-20 or 31-7, either way, I’ll pick the Cornhuskers to cover the 7.
–Bearcat fans–Enjoy a Kansas City Ribeye, tour the “Science City at Union Station,” and then set course 9 hours East on I-70 back home to regroup. This bedtime football game in the “Heart of America” will not be worth the trip.
Former QB Heinrich Haarberg moves to TE for the Huskers this season. At 6’5″ 240lbs, he could make for a relatively easy target on 3rd and 7.
Not a lot by way of analysis for this game in 6 weeks and 3 days, but that will not hinder me from typing my thoughts into this machine.
Still awaiting the 2025 College Football season and the stories it will bring.
Find the humor and keep on movin’
