The Saturday After Thanksgiving

“It was such a great game–you hate to see stuff like that after the game. You know, it’s bad for the sport, bad for college football, but at the end of the day, they gotta learn how to lose man. You can’t be fighting and stuff just because you lost the game. We have sixty minutes and four quarters to do all that fighting, and now you want to talk and fight? That’s wrong, bad for the game, classless in my opinion. People have to be better.” Kalel Mullings after beating Ohio St in Columbus last season.

Pitch dark, heavy cold, thick clouds. Me and the Bread Man on this Saturday Morning–AND hunters. Well, hunters that hunt on public land or have to drive a ways to their spot.

If a hunter happens to have the best mallard hunting in the world in the back yard, sleeping about two more hours or so will be in order. But if you are like most hunters, you are racing across the dark prairie or delta using two lane highways as interstates to hopefully nab the preferred location. Coffee in hand, last night’s dinner preparing for its rear exit, anticipation and excitement building, at least speaking from personal experience.

Me, the bread man, and the duck hunter. That’s who is awake on this Saturday after Thanksgiving, also known as “Rivalry Week” in College Football. A couple of which have been completed already

  • Indiana shut down Purdue (56-3) in a no surprise type of situation
  • Georgia took care of the “Rambling Wreck” (16-9)
  • Mississippi won the Egg Bowl
    • Trinidad Chambliss 385 Yards, 4 TD’s
  • Texas A&M 17 @ Texas 27
    • Texas 24-3 in the second half
  • Arizona won in Tempe (23-7)
    • Coach Brennen to 9-3!
  • Boise St scored late to beat Utah St in Logan (25-24)

What a first Saturday of the “Saturday Game.” No real surprises. Texas was always going to beat A&M this week. The question was would A&M keep it respectful enough to not damage their unbeaten record against their eggshell thin schedule. Getting drummed 24-3 in the second half is not very top team worthy.

Coming into the game, the Aggies were ranked 5th here at SHS. How far should they drop? Well, more needs to be known before a proper opinion can be formed, but the Aggies have left the door open for the worst case to happen in the next 8 days. Oh, to be an Aggie fan late in the season.

That’s how I wrote it this week. The scenario I presented only was relevant if they lost to the Longhorns. Now that they have accomplished step one, the sweat will be dripping underneath those Stetsons as they await the rest of the results and the SEC Championship Game. Again, win that game, and not one word of speculation from the other day matters, but lose by double digits and the door to disappointment could swing wide-open.

“Bear Down Arizona” had a magical season. One that was willed into fruition by the vision of Coach Brennen. He saw the special group of guys he had and figured out a way to skyrocket passed the dismal preseason projections cast on the Tucson bunch by some “loud college football voices.” I love to see it.

But what about today?

RIVALRY GAMES 11/29

  • Houston and Baylor at Noon could be a 41-34 type of game by the end.
  • 3-8 LA Monroe vs 5-6 Louisiana at 1:00
    • If you are football starved and need more that is
  • Vanderbilt at Tennessee at 1:30
    • This game has never mattered more
  • Wake @ Duke
    • Nick Andersen McNelly Watch
  • Oregon and Washington play at 1:30 and I expect it to be fun
    • “Fresh-McNelly” Aaron Flowers vs Demond Williams
  • 5-6 FSU vs 3-8 Florida: Not if you paid me
  • Va Tech/ UVA is in Primetime
  • USC/ UCLA and Alabama/ Auburn also in Primetime
  • Notre Dame at Stanford at 10:30 EST
    • Look out Irish Game

And of course, Ohio St at Michigan. One of my favorite games of the year. On this day, I have full confidence saying, that Sayin and company will win this game comfortably by the end. This Ohio St team is the one that will break the four game losing streak to the Wolverines. Full of NFL talent and led by a pissed off Head Coach–there is zero chance the Buckeyes lose this game.

Anything can happen, but I’m refusing to believe such things in this game. Sometimes, the dominant team just wins. While Michigan is no slouch program, they are levels below the Buckeyes this year. It’s just not close. Not even Dominic Zvada can save the Wolverines this year. I’m not sure what happened to last year’s best kicker in all the land, but he is missing one of three field goals this season. This coming off a 22/23 season where he was 7/7 on field goals over 50 yards and the one miss was due to the line allowing a block. Zvada is worlds off his game at the moment.

By one or by thirty, this will be an Ohio St win. This Buckeye team is one of the best assembled. Stars across the board. Last year, I liked the Hero in this game and wanted him to become a Titan. Kalel Mullings did exactly just that.

This year, I’ll take Jeremiah Smith or Caden Curry from Ohio St with the first pick. Game Changers.

So, that’s a quick look at where we are in the College Football world on this dark, cold, and quiet Saturday after Thanksgiving. Let’s continue to be grateful. The season is almost complete. Gratitude leads to love.
