Mullings Report (Week 6)

The Mullings Report

“Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort.”- Vince Lombardi

I am obviously a big fan of this young man and have been since Week 1, but I think it’s time to let someone else shower praise on him. The following is a quote from a press conference last week:

“Kalel has been a Superstar—as far as in the building, on the football field—ever since I’ve been here. He’s been asked to play Linebacker, to come back over and play offense, to do Special Teams whatever—that’s the type of player you want in your building. Not only has he—well, quite frankly, he’s bailed us out a couple of times, and that’s outstanding. We talk about players that make plays when there is not one to be had—those are the special ones, and he’s done that numerous times—that’s what makes him a special player and a special running back.”-Coach Kirk Campbell OC Michigan 10/2/24

Kalel Mullings Stats entering Week 6

  • 540 yards
  • 7 yards per carry
  • 6 TD’s

Total yards gained by the Michigan Offense: 1551

Week 6 Game: Michigan 17 @ Washington 27

  • 14 carries 49 yards

While Kalel didn’t light up the stat sheet or find the end zone in this game, his play on the field exemplified his team-player mentality as he took on every assignment asked of him with tenacity. As a fan of his, I watched almost every play the Michigan offense ran and wanted the ball in his hands at least 35 times, but that of course did not happen. However, it did give him the opportunity to showcase his work ethic when the ball was not in his hands, and as expected he did not disappoint. Every time he was on the field he made an impact. Whether it was helping in the run blocking scheme, protecting the QB, or running decoy handoffs into the teeth of the defensive line on play action pass plays, I saw the same tenacious mindset from Kalel. I’m sure he wants all of the carries, but he showed this past week that he can also be a team player.

His counterpart in the backfield, Donovon Edwards, another powerful runner, ended the game with the same number of carries but for 95 yards and a TD.

Mullings is still a must watch for me. Through 6 weeks, I’ve watched him take over games, break countless tackles, spring long runs, lay punishing blocks, and be friendly and charismatic in the post-game interviews, where he has praised both his teammates and the opposition. This young man is being “made” into a leader that Lombardi would respect.

Kalel and the Wolverines return to action Week 8 at Illinois following their Week 7 Bye.

Curious if Coach Campbell will wield his offensive weapons wisely next game.
