Bad Weather, Great Weather, Better Football: What a weekend for Utah

Well, it’s official. October 2025 is now in the Top5 Wettest months all time in Salt Lake.

4.96″ has been measured so far springing this month past April 1944 in 5th all time. I’m here for it! Alta measured 8″ of powder about an hour ago. I’m here for that to. This roller coaster weather pattern is throwing some 90-degree corkscrews and 5G loopy loops at us at the moment. Hang on tight. The only people who get hurt on roller coasters are the ones that jump off early. Just keep riding this weather coaster. It’ll eventually end.

Seemingly that end is coming today. The Ten-day forecast looks dry and clear beginning tomorrow. Potentially the ten most beautiful days of the year. Highs in the 50’s, 60’s and lows in the 30’s and 40’s with clear skies. Coming out of these first two weeks of rain and sporadic hail, the last two weeks of October are going to deliver in a major way. Major Way.

What better weekend for this year’s playing of the “Holy War”? I mean, seriously? Lavell Edwards is already dubbed “the most scenic stadium in America.” Now it’ll be the stage for the rivalry between the 5-1 Utah Utes and the unbeaten BYU Cougars. It’s truly what this game deserves. This is one that will be talked about for years to come. A massive media presence with the likes of Dave Portnoy and Big Noon Kickoff shining a large spotlight on this primetime matchup. Gimme that cougar tail. I like the chocolate. Not much on the original caramel.

“The most scenic stadium in America” is not hyperbole. It truly is. I’ve been there on two picture perfect days and sat on the West side which renders an idyllic backdrop of the Wasatch for anyone that sits there.

Fall foliage rising high up the steep hills. Conifer forests abundant but thinning towards the peaks. Jagged granite covered with freshly fallen snow. All in view from a seat inside of a football stadium. Good luck watching the ball. The sunshine on those foothills can be quite mesmerizing.

Now, factor in that the weather is going to be the most perfect that it has been this month, along with the stakes of the historic rivalry, the two teams’ nationally ranked status, and the massive media coverage and this could be one of, if not ‘the’ greatest “Holy Wars” of all time. 6PM local on Fox. Or go to it. Sit on the West side or anywhere–it’ll be perfect.

Whether it’s going to see a football game or otherwise, this weekend is one of those to get outside and play. Scamper up a mountain, jog along an Alpine Loop, push a swing at a park, kick a soccer ball, or sit in the wide-open spaces–get outside. This is one of those weekend’s that will be looked back at as being “the last pretty weekend before winter.” At least one of them. We may get three in a row. Either way, I’m not squandering the one in front of me this weekend.

So, here is the problem. As mentioned, a few days ago when I laid out the schedule, this just happens to be the most dramatic buildup to a college football weekend that we had this season. 18 Ranked teams on the road. 5 ranked on ranked matchups. Massive matchups in every window. So, how is one supposed to get outside and play without missing a crucial moment?

Which viewing window gets slashed in lieu of sunshine and cool, fresh air on Saturday?

It’s a quite simple answer for me as a neutral–skip the Noon window. Every ranked team in the early window should win. It’s the afternoon window and evening that will bring the most playoff firepower.

This will leave plenty of time for outdoor activities and then a near full day of football. Remember, Lafayette @ Oregon St at 10PM on the CW. It’ll be a late night if the Beavers make it a game against this collegiate giant, so be sure keep a turtle’s pace. Don’t crash out too early.

The important thing is to get outside. With the ones you love, by your lonesome, with your fuzzy friend, or with 60,000 others cheering for a football team–this is a weekend to get outside and live.

If you wake up to bad weather, which is inevitable in some places, get in a car and drive until you find good weather. It’s out there somewhere. Just kidding. If you wake up to bad weather, then the decision is made for you. This is the most jam-packed sports Saturdays of the year so far. Find a couch cushion, bean bag, or barstool and enjoy. Maybe get a hot drink or a cold one–Maybe smoke a shank or a roast. Maybe have a book for when the commercials come along. Utilize that mute button. It’s my best friend when watching games these days.

If you wake up to bad weather, there will still be plenty to enjoy out of the day if you are a football fan. Simply–turn on the TV at anytime and you will see the likes of top 10 Georgia Tech playing at Duke, Ole Miss playing at Georgia in a top 10 showdown, USC vs Notre Dame, Tennessee at Alabama, Utah at BYU–the list can go on and on.

If you are a football fan, then my friend let me tell you this–this Saturday is going to be like the Super Bowl, Champions League Final, and Masters Sunday rolled all into one. Pageantry, athleticism, and entertainment all will be on display this weekend with high stakes. I’ll be there for most of it.

I’ll be taking my own advice and getting plenty of outdoor time in before settling into the drop-down-den for the afternoon window. Some leaves to attend to and a mountain to scamper, but after that–it’ll be football all day.

You know? Before I end it, here is the list of the top5 Wettest Months in Salt Lake History.

  1. SEP 1982 7.04″
  2. NOV 1875 5.81″
  3. May 1908 5.76″
  4. May 2011 5.14″
  5. OCT 2025 4.96

It’s the 16th–I don’t think it’s likely that we get another two inches but it’s very much in the realm of possibility to move into second. The end of this month could have a chance of showers. We shall see. Maybe.

One more thing. Let’s do a ‘Top5 games to watch this weekend’ list. I’m doing this on the fly, so I’ll go with

Top5 Games to Watch 10/18

  1. UT @ Bama 1:30
  2. Utah @ BYU 6:00
  3. Miss @ UGA 1:30
  4. USC @ ND 5:30
  5. UNLV @ Boise 1:30

Something like that. There are at least 7 other games that could go in that 5th spot. I guess we will just have to watch them all, but only after we all go outside and play for a bit. It’s necessary.
