“The seventeen-year-old McNelly was in the forefront of the battle–that he not only led the charge against a Union battery but escaped death when a bullet bound for his heart was stopped by a book kept inside of his shirt.” FOLLOW ME to HELL- Tom Clavin
The following are on the official McNelly Freshman of the Year watchlist.
McNelly Freshman of the Year:
- Messiah Delhomme MD
- 16 Tackles, 2 Pass Deflections, 2 Punt Blocks, 1 Fumble Recovery
-The Maryland Defensive Back has made an impact in each game he has featured.
- Jayden Sanders MICH
- 16 Tackles, 1 Pass Deflection
- Love his tackling technique and fearlessness
-The Michigan Cornerback has stepped up and filled the much-needed role for the Wolverines.
- Ty Redmond TENN
- 17 Tackles, 1 INT, 4 Pass Deflections
-Due to injuries to starting Vols Cornerbacks Jermod McCoy and Rickey Gibson, Ty has shown courage and ability to fill the role of starting in their shoes. Notably, Ty played the most snaps of any other player in Tennessee’s loss to Georgia.
So, not a long list so far, but these three have stood out to me. There is still plenty of time for someone else to rise up and show a McNelly type of courage.
Big day of football. Messiah and Maryland are hosting Washington at 1:30, Jayden and Michigan are hosting Wisconsin at Noon, and Ty and Tennessee are resting on a bye this week before they host Arkansas 10/11.
Let’s go freshman DB’s! Only up!
