97 Days and counting until the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.
I was looking through the weekend’s football schedule and came across the reminder about the Sun Bowl being on Paramount+ at season’s end. It jogged my brain–Who might play in that game this year?
Held in El Paso and touted as the Second Oldest Bowl Game behind the Rose and tied alongside with the Sugar and Orange. Yessir. There’s bound to be history there. I wrote on the game back in mid-July. “Chief Best Supreme: Bowls of Sunshine” if you want to read more on it, but a simple history would be taking a glimpse of the last five results:
- Louisville 35 Washington 34 2024
- Notre Dame 40 Oregon St 8 2023
- Pitt 37 UCLA 35 2022
- Central Michigan 24 Washington St 21 2021
- Arizona St 20 Florida St 14 2019
It looks like this is the last season with the ACC/ PAC12 contract, but using the same criteria I think former PAC12 members can qualify for the bowl. Teams like Colorado, Arizona, Utah could qualify if necessary. I’m hoping to learn more as the season progresses. By my estimation, I think the following teams could end up being the next chapter in Sun Bowl history.
SUN BOWL Potential Matchups:
- Washington St vs Arizona
- Cal vs Washington St
- SMU vs Utah
- Colorado vs North Carolina
- Arizona vs SMU
At this point, nothing can be predicted, but I love this sport and love to romanticize it. Dreaming about The Sun Bowl and the next story that will unfold. Wichita’s Bill Parcells, Villanova’s Billy Joe, Priest Holmes, Thurman Thomas, and Jayden Daniels are just a fraction of the elite characters that have featured in this historic New Years Eve matchup. The Sun Bowl may just be another game, but it’s a historic one with another story to tell. I’m right on top of it the rest of the way.
Let’s see what happens as a few weeks pass.
